SE Asia Day 11-Viet Hai fishing village

Today we would make out way via ferry to the small fishing village of Viet Hai, on Cat Ba Island, where we planned to stay two or three nights.

We had a decent half American breakfast in Cat Ba town

And checked out the view from out $10 per night hotel one last time.
We then walked a mile over to another Harbor to catch what was supposed to be the 10:30 ferry, but being Sunday and the last day of Tet, we were told broken English, that there was no ferry. Instead, we would have to hire a private boat. After some negotiating, we figured it out, and hopped on.

We got our first views of the famous Halong Bay. It was overcast but still beautiful.

After the 40 minute boat ride, we pedaled the worst Some loaner bikes we about 5 km to the tiny village of Viet Hai.
We arrived at the Whisper Nature Bungalows, a quite place at the end of the road that has 6 concrete block cabins and a stream running through it. It seemed like a different world compared to the throng of tourists and city life of Siem Reap two nights ago.

We had most of the afternoon to poke around, so we went on a 2 hour hike to the top of a mountain, following this electrical cable up to cell phone towers.

To the top of the mountain, where we had great views down tot he village from where we came,
And to Halong Bay in the other direction.
It was a crazy steep hike on slippery, slick rocks and roots, but it was nice to get out and move.

We also did a short hike to a very cool cave/tunnel that was just the right size to walk through.

The dinner at the hotel was super delicious vietnamese food - rice and stir fries. We needed it for the kayaking we would do tomorrow.
